After disastrous play in a 10-0 loss in the Cubs’ home opener on Monday, the Pirates look to bounce back and defeat someone other than Cincinnati (weather permitting) as they send Jordan Lyles to the mound at 8:05 pm Eastern at Wrigley Field in Chicago.
Due to a Penguins playoff game, the Pirates will not be shown on the local ATT Sportsnet, but in the that market can be seen on the MLB Network (DirecTV 213-1, Dish 478) although this will likely be the Cubs’ feed.
Lyles pitched surprisingly well in his first start six days ago, shutting out the Reds over five innings - but over his career the Pirates’ fifth starter has a 5.24 ERA in 116 starts (5.28 as a reliever)
He’ll be faced by Yu Darvish, the former Japanese phenom who has struggled with injuries in recent seasons. Tommy John surgery cost him the last six week of 2014 and all of 2015. He apparently made a full recovery, pitching nearly as well before, which led the Cubs to sign Darvish to a six year/$126 million contract before the 2018 season - but that first season in Chicago was cut short on May 26 when he went down for the season with right triceps tendonitis. In Darvish’s first start this year he walked seven in two and two third innings, and then in his second he allowed four walks in four innings.
In 2017 (Darvish’s most recent full season) he allowed a .778 OPS to left-handed batter but only .600 to right-handers, the difference coming on a BABIP that was 35% higher and a home run rate 60% higher.
In response, Pirates manager Clint Hurdle put the lefty-swinging Colin Moran in at third base, and rookie Jason martin gets another start in left field.
