Gregory Polanco Returns From IL, Brault Optioned

MLB: Miami Marlins at Pittsburgh Pirates Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

OF Gregory Polanco will be activated off the 10-day injury list Monday, taking P Steven Brault’s place on the 25 man roster.

Polanco has been sidelined since Sep. 8 of last year when he sustained a knee and shoulder injury while sliding into second base. The left shoulder injury required surgery that has a normal 7-9 month recovery time, so his return is on the earlier end of that time frame. He’s coming back just in time, as the Pirates are already lost outfielders Starling Marte, Corey Dickerson and Lonnie Chisenhall to the injury list.

Polanco will play right field at bat third Monday.

Brault is being optioned to AAA Indianapolis. He has not appeared in a game since Apr. 8 in Chicago. He recorded a 9.64 ERA over 4.2 innings pitched.

The Pirates now have a more traditional seven man bullpen and five man bench at their disposal.
