Series Preview: Pirates at Rangers

MLB: Houston Astros at Texas Rangers Tim Heitman-USA TODAY Sports

The Pirates (12-14) will make their final scheduled appearance in Globe Life Park with two midweek contests. Interestingly enough, the ballpark opened right about when the Bucs’ current losing streak began.

The Rangers sit two games back of both the Astros and Mariners in the American League West. They have won their last two decisively, coming on the heels of a five-game losing streak. Texas split its four-game series with the Mariners over the weekend, with three of the games being blowouts — 14-2 and 5-4 losses and 15-1 and 14-1 wins.

The Pirates will host Texas for two games next week before the schedule returns to its normal, Rangerless state.

Tuesday, 8:05 p.m. — Jordan Lyles (2-1, 2.05 ERA) vs. Adrian Sampson (0-1, 4.50), TV: AT&T SportsNet

Wednesday, 2:05 p.m. — Jameson Taillon (1-3, 4.06) vs. Shelby Miller (1-1, 7.52), TV: AT&T SportsNet, MLB Network (out of market)

14-13 (14-13 Pythag, 6.00 RS/G, 5.59 RA/G)

The Rangers lead the league in runs per game after posting 29 over their last two contests. Elvis Andrus (.365/.426/.596, 5 HR) leads this group and Shin-Soo Choo (.330/.420/.577, 3 HR) still gets on base a bunch. Joey Gallo is hitting for a wildly high .259 average (with a 385 OBP, .647 SLG and 9 HR). Danny Santana (.345/.361/.552, 2 HR) has been a surprise, and Asdrubal Cabrera has popped six homers. Texas just got the struggling Rougned Odor (.158/.250/.246, 1 HR) back from the injured list.

Adrian Sampson (5.73 K/9, 3.27 BB/9), whom the Pirates once sent to Seattle for J.A. Happ, has gone between the rotation and the bullpen, making two starts this season. Poor Taylor Hearn, whom the Pirates sent to Texas in the Keone Kela trade. Hearn got lit up for four runs and recorded just one out in his Major League debut Thursday. He’s since been shut down for three weeks with elbow inflammation. Lance Lynn (8.57 K/9, 2.86 BB/9) and Mike Minor (8.63 K/9, 2.66 BB/9) have posted similar peripherals — Lynn has a 5.45 ERA, Minor a 2.88. Shelby Miller (4.43 K/9, 7.97 BB/9) has had tough sledding in a chance to get back on track after a career-derailing stint in Arizona.
