Game Thread: Pirates vs. Rockies, The Opener Strikes Back

MLB: Pittsburgh Pirates at San Diego Padres Jake Roth-USA TODAY Sports

The Pirates will use an opener for the second time this season Tuesday as they take on the Colorado Rockies in the middle game of their three day set.

Montana DuRapau (0-0, 1.35) will be the opener again. His first start came on May 18, where he allowed two base runners and struck out four in his two scoreless innings.

Jon Gray (3-4, 4.73) will go for the Rockies. Interestingly, Gray has done worse away from Coors Field this year, recording a 5.09 ERA in six road starts. The Pirates have scored 14 earned runs in 12.2 innings against Gray in his career, though he hasn’t faced the Bucs since 2016.

Gregory Polanco, who was a late scratch Monday, returns to the lineup, playing right field and batting third. Francisco Cervelli will sit the day after being struck in the throat with a foul ball.

First pitch is at 7:05 p.m..
