Bradenton and Greensboro swapped starting pitchers, with Brad Case promoted and making his first start in High-A on Sunday, while Luis Nova, who had after extended spring training started the season with Bradenton in aggressive promotion from rookie level Bristol in 2018. Nova did not do well in High-A but had a nice first game in a start for Greensboro on Saturday.

Games

The affiliates won three of four games, with strong performances by the starting pitcher for Indianapolis and Altoona.

Triple-A

Indianapolis (35-26) won 6-2 at Toledo (26-35)

24 year old Panamanian right-hander Dario Agrazal (5-3, 4.27) took a two-hit shutout into the seventh, then surrendering a two-run homer to 2B Kody Eaves (238/319/425), his seventh, following a RF Victor Reyes (284/314/484) double. Besides the four hits in seven innings, he walked one and struck out three throwing 61 of 91 pitches for strikes (67%). Agrazal has allowed two or fewer runs in eight of his last ten starts.

The Indians banged out eleven hits, scoring in every inning from the third to the seventh as Spencer Watkins (6-2, 5.40) took the loss. DH Pablo Reyes (257/297/505) hits his fifth homer, a two-run shot in the fourth. 3B Ke’Bryan Hayes (245/339/395), LF Kevin Kramer (273/357/465), SS Jake Elmore and C Christian Kelley each had two hits.

Double-A

Altoona’s (30-30) strong pitching continued in a 4-2 victory over visiting Akron (31-31)

A leadoff single in the first inning was the only baserunner allowed 23 year old Dominican right-hander Pedro Vasquez (6-2, 3.34) in six shutout innings, retiring the next eighteen batters in a row, eight on strikes. Vasquez threw 52 of 74 pitches for strikes (70%).

The Curve took the lead with three runs on five singles in the third inning. They held that 3-0 lead until the seventh when reliever Blake Cederlind quickly gave back two runs on three hits, but that was all the Rubber Ducks could muster.

1B Jerrick Suiter (251/309/317) and DH Logan Hill (279/356/438) each had two hits.

High-A

Bradenton (35-27) steamrolled 13-7 at Dunedin (38-24)

22 year old right-hander Brad Case (7-1, 2.70), who had dominated the South Atlantic league for Greensboro with a 2.45 ERA in eleven starts, allowing only 3 walks and 50 strikes in 66 innings, got knocked around in his first start after being promoted to Bradenton. Case allowed 4 runs on five hits, including a two-run homer, along with two walks while striking out four. He threw 68% of his pitches for strikes, but quickly amassed 85 pitches and was gone.

Despite leaving with a 7-4 lead, Case’s four innings pitched weren’t enough to qualify for the victory, which went to Gavin Wallace (5.34 ERA in 32 IP), who followed with four shutout innings, allowing only two hits.

The Marauders scored seven times in three innings, including three home runs, against Dunedin starter Jon Harris who was making his first appearance of the season. They finished with seventeen hits, four of them long balls, and five walks.

SS Adrian Valerio (178/226/256), who had started the season with Altoona, was 3-for-5 with his first home run. LF Chris Sharpe (305/385/463) continued his hot hitting with two singles and a double, driving in five. 3B Dylan Busby (200/302/443) hit his 11th homer and CF Danny Amaral (291/357/355) had three hits and drew two walks.

Low-A

Greensboro (40-23) was the lone loser, falling 4-3 at Lakewood (24-39)

20 year old right-hander Steven Jennings (4-6, 5.49), the Pirates’ 2nd round pick in 2017, had allowed only a third inning double through the first five innings, but with two outs in the bottom of the sixth, having retired 17 of the first 18 batters and leading 2-0, Jennings imploded, surrendering a single a walk, then three more singles, totalling three runs in the inning.

The Grasshoppers only had one hit through the first five innings and finished with just three for the day, two by 3B Mike Gretler (212/294/255)

Dominican Rookie

There were no games scheduled for Sunday.
