Game Thread: Brault looks to clean up on the Padres

The Pirates look to sweep the three game weekend series as Steven Brault (3-1, 4.40) takes the mound against the San Diego Padres at 1:35 p.m. Eastern at PNC Park in Pittsburgh. He’ll be facing the Padres’ left-hander Joey Lucchesi (6-4, 3.74)

Lucchesi broke into the majors last year, posting a 4.08 ERA for the Padres over 26 starts while averaging 10.0 strikeouts per nine innings. This year he’s dropped his ERA a bit to 3.74 with the K rate at 8.9. He faced the Pirates earlier this year in San Diego, losing 5-3, while personally allowing two runs in seven innings on five hits and no walks while fanning six.

He does this almost exclusively with a two-seam sinker that averages 90.8 mph and a curve. In his career Lucchesi has been tough on left-handed batters, allowing only a 595 OPS on a 223/293/301 line, while being average against right-handed batters, and quite susceptible top the long ball, with a 757 OPS and 244/302/455 line.

Steven Brault has seen a resurgence since returning to the rotation, allowing zero, one, two and zero runs in this four starts since May 29.

Playing the left/right splits, the Pirates will sit Adam Frazier and Colin Moran, going with Kevin Newman at 2B, Jung-ho Kang at SS and Jose Osuna at 3B. Other than their opposing pitcher, the only lefties either starter will gace will be the Padres’ Eric Hosmer.
