Game Thread: Rookie the Rookie Makes First Start With Bucs

MLB: Los Angeles Dodgers at Pittsburgh Pirates Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

The Pirates are in Milwaukee for their first match of their 10 game road trip, taking on the Brew Crew at 8:10 p.m..

Rookie Davis (0-0, 5.87) will be making the start for the Bucs. He struggled in AAA before getting the call to the show, and while he’s been tagged for a couple runs so far, he might be due for some luck. Coming into today, the difference between his wOBA and xwOBA was the second highest among all pitchers with at least 30 batters faced. In layman’s terms, he’s allowing hits, but not necessarily well struck hits.

The Brewers will counter with Brandon Woodruff (7-1, 3.82). Woodruff was quietly one of the best starters in baseball during the month of May (33 IP, 1.36 ERA), but the Pirates chased him after 4+ innings of six run ball on June 1.

Elias Diaz was the thorn in Woodruff’s side that day, going 3-3 with a double and four RBI. All three hits had an exit velocity over 100 MPH, too. Diaz is slashing .388/.408/.493 in 71 PAs since May 16.
