The Pirates will be looking for a studly performance from right-hander Trevor Williams (2-2, 4.25) as he takes on the Chicago Cubs at PNC Park in Pittsburgh. Game time for the first of a four game set is 7:05 p.m. Eastern. Right-hander Adbert Alzolay will go for the Cubs in his third major league appearance and second start.

The Cubs enter the game tied for first place in the National League Central Division with the Milwaukee Brewers, but only five games ahead of the Pirates.

The 24 year old Alzolay, from Venezuela, had only pitched 388 minor league innings spread over six seasons. His 2018 was cut short after eight starts at Triple-A Iowa, with a 4.76 ERA, but this year he’d trimmed that to 3.09 in six starts, with 6 walks and 46 strikeouts in 32 innings. In his last six Triple-A starts he’d posted a 1.93 ERA, allowing six runs in 28 innings.

Alzolay throw fairly hard, with a fastball that has averaged 94.7 mph in his limited time in the majors this year. He also throws a change 28% of the time and a curve 16%

Williams had a 3.33 ERA when he went on the disabled list on May 16, and has scuffled in the two games since he’s been reinstated, allowing 11 runs on 17 hits, four of them home runs, in 11 23 innings.

Bryan Reynolds returns to the starting lineup, and Jung-ho Kang will start at shortstop in place of Kevin Newman, with Adam Frazier moving up to the leadoff spot.
