The Pirates take on the Phillies at 7:05 p.m. Eastern at PNC Park in Pittsburgh in the official 40th anniversary celebration of the 1979 world’s championship team. Joe Musgrove (6-8, 4.31) will pitch for Pittsburgh, opposed by right-hander Zach Eflin (7-9, 4.16) of Philadelphia.

Eflin had a 4.83 career ERA over parts of four seasons with the Phillies. He failed to establish himself with a 5.54 ERA in 2016 and 6.16 in 2017, but last year made 24 starts as his runs allowed dropped to 4.36. This year he’s averaging 1.5 homers, 2.3 walks and 7.5 K’s per 9 innings. He’s faced the Pirates once, on July 22, 2016, throwing a complete game three-hit shutout. Over the next three starts he allowed twenty runs in thirteen innings and was banished to the minors for the rest of the year. This year her’s been knocked around for a 9.90 ERA and seven homers over his last four starts, covering twenty innings.

Eflin has a four-seam fastball that averages near 94 mph coupled with a slider that he throws 26% of the time. This year he’s been touched up by left-handed batters for a .880 OPS on a 273/335/545 batting line that includes 12 home runs in just over 200 batters faced. Against right-handers he’s a better .694 OPS (268/305/390)

Musgrove has struggled with consistency this year. After allowing six runs to Atlanta on June 13 his ERA ballooned to 4.87 but he then allowed only one run over his next three. The last two have been less impressive, totaling seven runs, but over his last five starts Musgrove has compiled a 2.70 ERA in 26 23 innings.

This year Musgrove is allowing a .806 OPS by left-handed batters, om a 289/327/479 line, while he’s limited right-handers to a .672 OPS (219/286/386)
