The Cardinals and Pirates meet for game three of the their series at 7:05 p.m. Eastern at PNC Park in Pittsburgh. 37 year old veteran right-hander Adam Wainwright (6-7, 4.50) will face the Pirates’ Jordan Lyles (5-6, 4.91)

Wainwright has been a regular member of the St. Louis this season after making only eight starts in 2018, and has not had an ERA lower than 4.50 in more than 100 innings since 2014, compiling a 4.71 mark over the last four years. The last time out Wainwright gave up seven runs in three and a third innings to the Reds, although the game before that he shutout the Diamondbacks for seven innings. He’s faced the Pirates twice so far this year, giving up four runs in four innings on Apr. 1 in Pittsburgh and one run in seven innings on May 10 in St. Louis.

So far this year Wainwright has been vulnerable to left-handed hitters, who’ve combined for a .881 OPS on a 286/374/506 batting line, white righties have a 712 OPS on a 252/315/397 line.

Lyles, who had a 1.97 ERA through his first eight starts of the year, then suffered through a 10.13 mark over his next seven, wrapped around a sting on the Injured List, as the Pirates lost six of those seven games. After back-to-back seven run outings, Lyles finally righted himself, allowing one run in five and two third to the Phillies five days ago, with one walk and seven strikeouts.
