In last night’s marathon, the Pittsburgh Pirates got things going early against the Colorado Rockies.
Kevin Newman started the game with a home run. Bryan Reynolds and Starling Marte singled followed by a Josh Bell walk to load the bases. Colin Moran then doubled to make the score 3-0 Pirates. They weren’t done though. Singles from Adam Frazier and Jacob Stallings made the score 5-0. The Pirates batted around the order and Newman put an exclamation point on the inning by singling in two more runs. Boom, touchdown. 7-0 Pirates.
This was a typical Coors Field game.
The Pirates carried a “comfortable” 11-3 lead heading into the bottom of the eight inning after Trevor Williams lasted seven innings. Montana DuRapau wan ineffective giving up four earned runs while only recording two outs. His ERA is now 9.35 on the season and FIP 5.58. Michael Feliz then came in the try and record the final out. He could not after allowing a home run, walk, and single. Finally, Francisco Liriano was brought in and ultimately able to clean up the mess. 11-8 Pirates.
In the ninth, Felipe Vazquez recorded an easy one-two-three save with two strikeouts. Oh what a joy it is to watch him pitch.
Some Stats
- Trevor Williams went seven innings, giving up three earned runs on seven hits. He struck out six and walked zero. This is a solid outing, especially in Colorado.
- Kevin Newman went 4-4 with two (!) home runs and a double. He is now hitting .309/.354/.439 on the year. As it turns out, hitting the ball hard is good.
- Adam Frazier went 4-5 (all singles) with two RBI.
- Jose Osuna and Colin Moran both went 2-5 with two RBI. Osuna homered in this game and Moran doubled.
