RF Fernando Villegas (284/359/420) was promoted from Bristol to West Virginia. After going 0-for-9 on a rehab assignment with the GCL Pirates, the 21 year old from Mexico hit 319/372/472 in 18 games with Bristol.

2B Yoyner Fajardo (327/385/355) was promoted from the GCL Pirates to Bristol

Bristol activated RHP Lizardy Dicent who’d been out since June 17.

Altoona (56-57) pulls out 6-5 win over visiting Richmond (41-70)

After LF Chris Sharpe (260/347/432) singled to load the bases in the bottom of the seventh, SS Oneil Cruz (302/348/500) singled to left to bring home both the tying and decisive runs.

Sharpe, who had three hits and who’d earlier doubled, slammed a two-run homer in the fifth, his 12th of the year, which gave the Curve a 5-2 lead at the time, but Clay Holmes, rehabbing from Pittsburgh, came on in relief and gave up a pair of runs in the sixth and another in the seventh on four hits and a walk.

Nick Economos (8-7, 2.77) pitched the first five innings, allowing two runs on four hits and two walks while striking out six. Cody Ponce (3.48 ERA, 48 K’s in 41 13 IP) earned a save with three strikeouts in two perfect innings.

CF Jared Oliva (286/362/422) singled and stole his 32nd base in 40 attempts.

High-A

Greensboro (67-45) drops 4-3 scores at Greenville (49-64)

Starter Steven Jennings (5-10, 5.14) surrendered a two-run homer in the first and another two runs in the second. In five innings he was touched for five hits and a walk while fanning four.

He was followed by Winston Nicacio (2.23 ERA in 36 13 IP) who struck out four of the nine batters he faced in three perfect innings, but the Grasshoppers weren’t able to come back.

CF Jonah Davis (220/310/428) had a single, double and a walk in four at bats and is hitting 305/373/603 with ten homers in his last 33 games since June 30.

Short Season A

West Virginia (25-23) wins 5-2 at Mahoning Valley (22-28)

Braxtan Ashcraft (5.68 ERA in 44 13 IP) earned his first victory as he allowed two runs in five innings on four hits and three walks. He struck out three.

Francis del Orbe (4.18 ERA in 23 23 IP) followed with three scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and one walk.

The Black Bears only had six hits but drew eight walks and scored twice in the second on a double by CF Brett Kinneman (164/277/289) and three more times in the third, highlighted by a two-run bases loaded single by C Kyle Wilkie (243/331/290)

Advanced Rookie

Bristol (20-24) loses 8-5 at Danville (19-27)

Dante Mendoza (7.22 ERA in 28 23 IP) had another rough start, giving up three runs in four innings on four hits and three walks, after surrendering twelve runs in four and two thirds innings in his previous two starts, but still managed to exit with a 4-3 lead.

Reliever Matt Eardensohn (3.26 ERA in 19 13 IP) couldn’t hold onto that lead, getting hammered for six hits in two and a third, which pushed three runs across.

LF Jean Eusebio (222/329/319) hit a two-run homer in the second inning, his second of the year, and also walked.

DH Samuel Inoa (316/361/439) had three hits and a walk while 2B Jesus Valdez (274/371/379) and RF Jake Wright (208/357/283) had two hits apiece.

Rookie

GCL Pirates at Twins, as well as a makeup of their July 23 postponement, were postponed

Dominican Rookie

Pirates-1 (26-29) walk-off 4-3 over Indians (21-31)

DH Juan Jerez’ (272/330/450) two-out bases load single in the bottom of the ninth drove in the winning run. The Pirates had led 3-1 into the ninth but the Indians scored two in the top of the inning to tie the score.

The Pirates didn’t have a hit and struck out five times in four innings against Indians’ starter Tomas Reyes (2.78 ERA in 45 13 IP) but he was nearly matched by the good start of the Pirates’ Listher Sosa (3.14 ERA in 43 IP), who allowed one run in four innings on five hits and two walks while fanning six.

1B Darwin Baez (284/337/426) had two hits.

Pirates-2 (44-11) fall 11-6 at Giants (23-31)

Starter Jorge Ramos (3.12 ERA in 40 13 IP) coughed up a two-run homer as part of a four run fourth, allowing five hits and two walks in five innings as he fanned three. The bullpen then surrendered seven more runs on six hits over the next three innings.

The Pirates got solo homers from RF Deivis Nadal (291/405/405), his third, and RF Rodolfo Nolasco (280/352/460), his fifth.
