Coming off a historically disastrous road trip to Wrigley Field, with Starling Marte and Josh Bell apparently on the shelf for the rest of the year, and with Felipe Vazquez appearing to be gone...forever, the Pirates will play host to the Seattle Mariners at 7:05 p.m. Eastern, with Marco Gonzales facing Mitch Keller.
In his second full season in the majors, Gonzales leads the Mariners in starts with 31, posting a 4.30 ERA with 2.5 walks but only 6.7 strikeouts per nine innings on a fastball that average only 88.4 mph.
The Pirates send out a lineup that looks more at home in Triple-A, but the Mariners’ starting nine, heavy with left-handed batters is also short on major league experience or quality, as Seattle has struggled to a 62-90 record this year.
