Break out the broomsticks. The Pittsburgh Pirates have swept the Chicago Cubs, defeating them tonight by a score of 9-5.
Things got started early when Pablo Reyes hit a two-run triple in the first inning. He smacked three hits on the night and was a home run away from the cycle.
In the third inning, the Pirates added three more runs thanks to a two-run double by Jose Osuna and RBI single from Jacob Stallings. They led 5-0 after four. Sloppy play from the Cubs allowed the Pirates to add two more runs in the fifth inning.
After the Cubs scored three in the sixth, the Pirates answered right back with two more runs to extend their lead to 9-3. On the night, they recorded 16 hits, including five of the extra-base variety. Melky Cabrera and Jose Osuna each went 3-5 with a double. Reyes went 3-4. Adam Frazier went 2-5.
Joe Musgrove was solid in his final start of the year going six innings. He allowed three runs (two earned), stuck out eight, and walked two. Musgrove’s final 2019 ERA will be 4.44. At this rate, he may end up being the Pirates’ 2020 Opening Day starter.
