With Bristol and the DSL Pirates-2 already knocked out of their playoffs and West Virginia being eliminated on the final day, minor league baseball is over the for Pirates’ affiliates for another year.
There were only four games on the schedule, all four resulting in shutouts - of which three were losses and only one a win. Isn’t that a marvel?

Triple-A
Indianapolis (66-74) wins 4-0 at Louisville (59-81)
James Marvel (16-5, 2.94 ERA in 162 1⁄3 IP) finished his season on a high note, running his record to 7-0 with a 2.67 ERA in Triple-A, as he fanned five in five scoreless innings, allowing five hits and two walks. His teams won fifteen of the last sixteen games he started, with the one loss in a game where Marvel threw four scoreless innings.
1B Will Craig (249/326/435) smacked an RBI double in the fifth and the Indians tacked on two more runs on RF Eric Wood’s (247/319/414) double.
LF Kevin Kramer (260/335/417) had three hits.
Double-A
Altoona (69-71) blanked 1-0 at Harrisburg (76-63)
Sean Brady (6-13, 4.27 ERA in 162 1⁄3 IP) allowed just one hit in six innings, a solo homer by RF Michael A. Taylor (248/324/463), his ninth, with two outs in the bottom of the sixth, but that was enough to make him a loser as nary a Curve batter crossed the plate all day.
Brady walked two and struck out four, and allowed just two runs over his final three starts, covering 22 innings. In 20 starts since May 21, he posted a 3.27 ERA in 127 innings.
CF Jared Oliva (277/352/398) had two of Altoona’s six hits.
High-A
No games scheduled.
Low-A
Greensboro (79-59) blanked 2-0 at Charleston, West Virginia (69-70)
A leadoff single and a pair of two out doubles produced two runs for the Power in the bottom of the first, and that 2-0 lead held up as the Grasshoppers didn’t even get a hit until LF Justin Harrer (231/326/380) tripled with one out in the eighth.
Starter Winston Nicacio (4-4, 2.80 ERA in 61 IP) allowed only two more hits over his six innings, fanning six without a walk.
CF Jonah Davis (239/324/470) had the only other hit, a ninth inning double. After a disastrous first 30 games in which he went 13-for-110 with 54 strikeouts, since July 1 Davis hit 300/369/586 in 55 games, covering 250 plate appearances, with 16 home runs and 83 strikeouts. He now has 31 homers in 136 career minor league games.
Short Season A
Morgantown, West Virginia (40-36) blanked 2-0 at Mahoning Valley (37-39)
Needing only to win to advance to the playoffs, the Black Bears, who’ve struggled mightily with the bat recently, matched zeroes with Mahoning Valley until the bottom of the sixth when reliever Denny Roman (4.19 ERA in 38 2⁄3 IP) was touched for a two-run double to the gap in right center field. Coupled with Batavia’s 7-0 victory, Morgantown fell a game short of the division title.
Long reliever Francis del Orbe (3.43 ERA, 48 K’s in 42 IP) got the start and lasted 65 pitches, keeping the Scrappers off balance with a steady stream of sliders, as he fanned five in three and two thirds scoreless innings, allowing just two singles and a walk.
Roman got out of the fourth but got knocked around for four hits over the next two innings.
3B Dean Lockery (236/321/297) had two of the Black Bears’ three hits.
