The key players for the next reconstruction- A vision according to WAR.
Before explaining which players should be traded and which should remain in the Pittsburgh Pirates, let me start with a truly relevant nuance. And it is that the following lines are not personal opinions, I want to make it clear, they are simply the reflection of the WAR estimates for the next 3 years, according to the projections of ZiPS. Of course, these projections take into account that the entire season would be disputed, something that seems impossible today due to the suspension of matches caused by COVID-19.
Before beginning to tip the balance in favor of one or the other, I would like to mention Ryan Borgemenke, who a few months ago published an article for the Baseball Research Journal of SABR, in which he concluded that 57.3% of the time , the team that came to the World Series with a higher global WAR, was victorious. So far everything normal. It does not seem very significant, nor am I thinking that the Pirates are going to play a World Series soon.
Despite all this, the truth is that it is a highly recommended article, and I invite everyone to read. Despite Borgemenke being an outspoken fan of the Cincinnati Reds, I was personally so inspired by reading his article that I decided to start working to assess what WAR’s prospects are for each player on the Pirates roster.
In this situation, my subsequent thought was: “assuming that these predictions were true, which players should be exchanged for prospects to rebuild the franchise?”. Here are some results.
1. Josh Bell
As an avowed admirer of Josh Bell, this analysis hurts me more than anyone else. On my recent visit to Pittsburgh, I happened to run into JB in the middle of town after a match against the Cubs. I explained that I had traveled from Spain to cheer on the team and he was extremely kind to me. A detail that I will hardly ever forget.
However, I have promised to be true to the statistical results, and the forecasts cannot be more pessimistic about Bell. Last season he signed a WAR of 2.5, while his average in the coming years would be 2.0, reaching his lowest level in 2022 with a WAR of 1.9.
That is why, its maximum value to look for good transfers in an exchange would be prior to the start of this next season (whenever it starts, of course).
2. Adam Frazier
Adam Frazier’s case is quite similar to JB’s. For this 2020, its recess in terms of WAR could be -0.2 points, going from a WAR 2.2 to a 2.0.
Furthermore, statistically his worst years were yet to come. It is very likely that its highest market value is at the moment, as already commented during the last Winter Meetings, where some sources pointed out the interest of several franchises for Frazier. It is now when the Pirates should look for good prospects as a bargaining chip.
3. Colin Moran
In this case, Colin Moran aims to be one of the most controversial cases on this list, because according to projections, he is one of the players who will most improve his performance in 2020, increasing by 0.4 in terms of WAR.
The truth is that it is not very difficult, some will think, after the discreet performance it offered in the past year. The truth is that although there would be an improvement, he is not expected much more than being a replacement player, probably to end up giving Hayes rest in 3B or Bell in 1B (as long as he remained in the franchise).
The truth is that currently, the value of Colin Moran in the market is residual, for a position where defensive skills are so relevant.
My proposal? Convert it to 1B full time, so Hayes and Osuna will combine the hot corner soon. If Josh Bell were to be traded, Moran could be temporarily filling his position, which would require less solidity from the defense.
4. Keone Kela
In terms of WAR, Keone Kela’s next season would be traced to the previous one, only increasing his WAR from 0.4 to 0.5. However, in a closer role, its notoriety could increase its value in the market.
For all these reasons, and this being his last year of contract, the only realistic option would be to transfer it before the market closes in 2020.
5. Gregory Polanco and Chris Archer
Despite being two very different cases, due to the trajectory of both in recent months, the truth is that we are talking about two players who have performed below, to a greater or lesser extent, the expectations that the Pittsburgh fans had put on them.
However, if health respects them, their WAR forecasts would apparently be much better in this 2020. Even so, both would start to suffer a recess in the coming years, so the best option would be to look for a transfer at the end of this season. or during the next winter.
6. Joe Musgrove, Bryan Reynolds & Kevin Newman
Before writing my review, I am fully aware that what I will comment below is somewhat difficult to imagine, however, the projections suggest that we have possibly already seen the best versions of these three players. At least until 2022.
It is clear that they are all young players, who should symbolize the reconstruction of these Pittsburgh Pirates. With all this, the best option would be to renew their contracts within a couple of years, when their performance has dropped a bit, hoping that from 2023 they will finally take off, reaching the level we all want, above what we have seen until now. The projections invite us to be patient with each one of them.
Finally, we shouldn’t forget about some very karat pitchers like Jameson Taillon or Chad Kuhl, who are very difficult to assess right now due to their recent injuries.
The opposite case is symbolized by Cole Tucker, Ke’Bryan Hayes or Mitch Keller, who are called to establish themselves definitively in the Major Leagues for the next few months, and about whom definitely, taking into account or not the forecasts of WAR, we can affirm that they are the future of this franchise.
