Game Recap: Pirates vs Cubs, 9/1/20

MLB: Chicago Cubs at Pittsburgh Pirates Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

The Pittsburgh Pirates were defeated 8-7 in 11 innings tonight against the Chicago Cubs.

Ke’Bryan Hayes had himself an impressive debut going 2-5 with a double and home run. He also drove in two runs and scored three times. His solo home run came in the bottom of the eighth inning to tie the game at 6-6. Hayes’ defense was also as advertised as he had a few impressive plays at third base.

Chad Kuhl went four-plus innings tonight, allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits and two walks. He struck out three. Tyler Bashlor relieved Kuhl and gave up two earned runs. At that point, the Pirates trailed 6-1. The Pirates’ bullpen would not allow another earned run after Bashlor was relieved.

The Pirates scored four runs on four hits and a walk in the bottom of the sixth. With one out, Jacob Stallings got the rally started with a single. Colin Moran then walked followed by the Hayes double. Adam Frazier then singled and Jose Osuna doubled. Eric Gonzalez capped off the rally with a sac fly. The Pirates trailed 6-5 at that point.

In the tenth inning, the Cubs scored a run on a Jason Heyward sac fly. In the bottom of the tenth, Anthony Alford drove in Hayes with a fielder’s choice to tie the game at seven.

In the 11th, Ian Happ drove in the runner from second base with a leadoff single. The Pirates could not answer in the bottom of the inning and lost 8-7. Kyle Crick was saddled with the loss.

Tomorrow night, Derek Holland will oppose Kyle Hendricks in the second game of this series.

The first pitch is at 7:05.
