With October winding down and postseason baseball heating up, we figured that it would be fun to craft a list of the Pittsburgh Pirates’ top 10 postseason moments of all-time.
This is an opportunity to bring back some nostalgia and spread some positivity as we tune into the World Series.
Coming in at No. 7 on our list...
Cueto! Cueto! Cueto!
It was the first Buccos playoff appearance since 1992. It was the first Pittsburgh playoff series win since the 1979 World Series. And it came at home in front of a sellout, standing-room-only crowd at PNC Park against a long-time postseason rival.
Johnny Cueto was mocked by the entire city of Pittsburgh, resulting in the “Drop seen ‘round the world”, and Russell Martin immediately delivered, taking him yard and whipping the crowd into an absolute frenzy. Martin hit a second dinger later in the game, and Marlon Byrd also had a homer, which is what lead off the scoring and got Pirates fans excited to begin with.
Francisco Liriano went 7 innings, giving up just 4 hits and a run, and the Buccos advanced to the next round in the playoffs for the first time in 34 years with a 6-2 win over the Cincinnati Reds. 2013 was a fun season.
