————————————————————————————————————————————————
The Pittsburgh Pirates will look to climb one game closer to .500 and even their series with the Minnesota Twins when the two teams tangle in a 2:10 p.m. start at Target Field.
Trevor Cahill (0-2) gets the start for the Pirates while Michael Pineda (1-0) opens for Minnesota.
Pittsburgh was nearly no-hit in Friday night’s series opener, as former Buc J.A. Happ took a no-no into the eighth inning before Jacob Stallings – mired in a 0-for-19 slump – doubled sharply to left to break it up.
That was the lone Pirates’ hit on the night, though, as they feel meekly, 2-0, spoiling a solid outing by starter JT Brubaker.
The righthander went seven strong innings and gave up five hits while striking out five. He did not walk a batter and needed just 79 pitches, 55 of which were strikes.
The lone blemishes on his card were a pair of solo home runs – one that Willians Astudillo tomahawked out to left in the third inning and the other that Jake Cave took to the opposite field in left in the fifth.
Happ was, well, nearly unhittable in going 7 1/3 innings, striking out three and walking two in a 95-pitch outing.
Cahill has had trouble getting started this season; in his most recent outing a week ago he allowed five first-inning runs in a loss to the Brewers. He also allowed runs in the first inning of his previous two starts.
Pineda, a 32-year-old right-hander, has allowed just 10 hits and three walks in 18 innings over three starts thus far. He’s given up just two runs over that span, two of which came on home runs, and brings a 0.722 WHIP into today’s start.
