The key to the Pirates success could be out for a little bit.
Early Sunday, the Pirates placed potential Rookie of the Year 3B Ke’Bryan Hayes on the 10-day disabled list.
Hayes left Saturday’s game against the Cubs with a wrist injury and was replaced early in the game by Erik González, who played the remainder of the game at third.
Despite the MRI’s coming back negative, it appears Hayes will be sidelined for the forseeable future.
In order to add some infield depth, the team added infielder Wilmer Difo from the taxi squad.
Difo, 29, played with the Washington Nationals from 2015-20 and appeared with the club in Spring Training but failed to make the Opening Day roster.
Difo entered Sunday’s contest against the Cubs as a pinch hitter in the ninth inning with a chance to tie the game, but lined out to shortstop.
In a corresponding move to add Difo to the 40-man roster, the team designated RHP Tyler Bashlor for assignment.
