The Pittsburgh Pirates will look to make it three straight over the Colorado Rockies when the two teams meet at 1:05 p.m. at PNC Park.

Right-hander Chase De Jong will make his first start as a Pirate today after being recalled from Indianapolis. There, the 27-year-old was 2-0 with 3.60 ERA. In four starts, De Jong allowed 16 hits and eight runs while walking eight and striking out 28.

A second-round draft choice of the Toronto Blue Jays in the 2012 amateur draft, De Jong has appeared in 15 games at the major league level, seeing time in the big leagues with Seattle, Minnesota and Houston.

The 6-foot-4, 230-pounder was signed by the Pirates in January after he was granted his free agency by Houston in October of 2020.

He appeared in three games with the Astros last season, two of which came in starting assignments. He did not fare well; in his 7 1/3 innings of work he allowed 12 hits and 12 earned runs for an ERA of 14.73.

The Bucs posted a rare doubleheader sweep Saturday, both via the shutout route. JT Brubaker gave the club a strong effort in the 7-0 first-game win and on-again off-again starter Mitch Keller was on again in the nightcap, leading the Pirates to a 4-0 win.

Pittsburgh will look to match its longest winning streak of the year in today’s matchup; the Bucs won three straight April 24-27 when they took the final two games of a three-game series against the Twins in Minnesota and then opened a two-game series at home by beating the Royals. Since then, the Bucs have won consecutive games only once – May 14-15 against the Giants – prior to Saturday’s doubleheader sweep.

The Rockies’ Freeland has made just one start on the season, working four innings and giving up four hits and a run while striking out five and walking three in a 3-1 loss to the Mets on May 25.

For his career, the 2014 first-round pick is 33-32 with a 4.15 ERA in 97 starts for the Rockies.

In a personnel move, the Pirates designated infielder Ildemaro Vargas for assignment Saturday. Vargas, 29, had just one hit in 13 at-bats for the Pirates after being claimed off waivers from the Cubs earlier this month. He had been 3 for 21 for the Cubs prior to being designated for assignment there.
