Pirates sunk by Cards 3-0

Adam Wainwright strikes (a lot of Bucs out) again.

The struggles of the Squid.

It’s official: Cardinals pitcher Adam Wainwright has killed more Pirates than the British Navy.

In today’s game thread, BD Commentariat member DekesLeft noted that Wainwright has a lifetime 19-7 record against the Pirates.

Um, make that twenty, Deke.

Wainwright certainly didn’t pitch like someone staring down the barrel at forty, as in eight innings he dealt out nine Ks, gave up only two hits, and got the shutout over the Pirates again, this time 3-0 at Busch Stadium.

Was Steven Brault awful? No. In five innings, he gave up one earned run (in the first inning, Yadier Molina scored Paul Goldschmidt, who’d doubled earlier), walked two, struck out one, and made a fantastic defensive play in the fourth inning to keep it a one-run game. Good job, Squid. Not so good job, Pirates battery, who only got two other hits off Cards pitching. Kevin Newman got the sole Buc extra-base hit, doubling off Wainwright in the fifth inning. Even worse, Goldschmidt took Kyle Keller’s very first pitch in the fifth in relief of Squid into Big Mac Land, which seemed to make Greg Brown and Bob Walk absurdly happy for some reason. Molina figured in the final Cardinal run as well, singling off Anthony Banda and scoring on a Harrison Bader one-bagger. Sigh.

Yoshi Tsutsugo also came back down to earth, striking out three times and bobbling two balls in left field, much to Bryan Reynolds’s disgust, as evidenced by this awesome GIF provided by Deke:

I will never not see B-Rey as Mario from now on.

The Pirates will be back in the Burgh tomorrow to take on the stirring Diamondbacks. #BattleoftheTanks
